Filter replacement guide

CPAP Filter Replacement Schedule

Filters protect airflow through the CPAP machine. They are inexpensive, easy to overlook, and highly dependent on the room environment. Homes with pets, dust, smoke, or heavy pollen may need a more aggressive filter schedule.

Disposable filter timing

Disposable CPAP filters are commonly planned around every 2 weeks. The right timing can be shorter in dusty rooms, during allergy season, or if the filter visibly darkens.

Washable filter timing

Reusable or washable filters are often planned around every 6 months for replacement, with regular washing in between. A washable filter still wears out and should be replaced when it no longer looks or performs like a clean filter.

When to change filters sooner

Do a quick visual check when cleaning the machine area. Filter condition is one of the simplest ways to spot environmental problems around CPAP therapy.

  • The filter is gray, dusty, stained, torn, or misshapen.
  • Airflow seems reduced or the machine sounds different.
  • There are pets, smoke, construction dust, or high pollen in the home.
  • The machine manual recommends a different replacement interval.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash disposable CPAP filters?

Usually no. Disposable filters are generally meant to be replaced, not washed. Check the machine manual before washing any filter.

Are CPAP filters covered by insurance?

Many plans cover replacement filters on a defined schedule, but coverage depends on the plan, supplier, documentation, and whether the item is medically necessary.

Informational only - not medical or insurance advice. Verify replacement timing, eligibility, and medical needs with your doctor, DME supplier, insurer, Medicare, and the manufacturer.
